[introduction]

Detonator is the name NVIDIA have given to their reference display drivers.  These are the generic display drivers for NVIDIA's TNT and GeForce range of chips.  They are given to card manufacturers for them to add support for additional features that they add to their cards, for example, video capture, TV output, VR glasses and temperature sensing.  If you install these drivers, you will lose support for these additional features, but you will be using the fastest, and most up-to-date drivers available.  In June 2000, NVIDIA released the Detonator 2 drivers which include support for the new GeForce 2 GTS and full scene anti-aliasing.

If you are using drivers provided by your card's manufacturer then you must unistall those drivers as well as any control panel or 'tweaking' tools before you attempt to install NVIDIA's drivers.  If you are using Windows 9x you should install DirectX 7.0 or newer to take full advantage of the Detonator features.  I haven't had much luck with the 5.22 drivers, I will post information after further testing. Here are a few tools that you may find useful.  We wrote GeTune for the Detonator drivers to allow you to change a few driver settings that are unavailable in NVIDIA's own Tweak program.  HZ Tool allows you to control refresh rates fr different display modes in Windows 9x.  WCPUID reports information on your CPU, as well as current AGP settings, such as transfer rate (1X, 2X, 4X), aperture size and whether side band addressing is enabled, very useful when testing new display drivers.
